a small town museum with big history
Way up north along the banks of the mighty Mackenzie River, you’ll find the town of Norman Wells – or Tłegǫ́hłı̨ (Thleh-go-lee) which translates to ‘where there is oil’…
We’ve got that and so much more.
THE JOURNEY NORTH
Norman Wells, located in the Sahtu Region, is 145 kms south of the Arctic Circle and is only accessible by road during the winter months on the ice road (click here for map).
Daily flights to and from Norman Wells are available through North-Wright Airways. The locally owned and operated airline also offers charter options and are kept busy all summer long as they shuttle hunters, canoeists, and hikers into the Mackenzie Mountains.
Although less frequent (read: plan your trip accordingly), Canadian North also offers weekly flight options from Edmonton and Yellowknife.
CN, NWA, and Buffalo Airways (of the tv show Ice Pilots) all offer cargo and freight options.
During summer months, freight has historically be sent up the Mackenzie River on barges from Hay River via MTS or Cooper Barging, however the barge has become less reliable over the last several years due to low water levels on the river.
